1This issue of FACTS Reports on local democratic innovations is an outstanding and unique achievement, because for the first time it brings together this key subject for humanity, and the peer review process for papers on this subject. Indeed, the goal of the FACTS Reports is to provide a platform for communication and exchange between those involved with development directly in the field, encouraging them to publish their achievements as scientific papers (with a specific format and peer review process).

2This special issue presents many and varied field actions, such as the promotion of the rights of young people, the resolution of the conflicts of agropastoral activities, or the process of participatory decisionmaking on community budgetary allocations, among many others. It addresses projects developed all over the world, on five continents, and covering both the northern and southern hemispheres. The legitimate initial queries and doubts that assailed those who started this publication as regards its feasibility, have been swept away by the enthusiasm and the large number of papers that have been sent in.

3This issue on local democratic innovations has produced high quality results, and readers can now enjoy them on the FACTS Reports website. The outcome is the result of the collective work, carried out with as much conviction as generosity, of the various participants:

  • firstly, the authors of the papers, who invested their time and effort and trusted in the methods applied by FACTS Reports,

  • the members of CIVICUS, who have made this publication possible with their hard work and commitment,

  • the Institut de Recherche et débat sur la Gouvernance (IRG, institute for research and debate on governance), for its valuable contribution,

  • Henri Rouillé d’Orfeuil, Member of the Academy of Agriculture of France and Henri Valot, Former Outreach Director of Civicus, the principal investigators of this publication,

  • the RESOLIS Observatory and its Director Agnes Chamayou, who coordinated the editorial validation (peer review) with considerable care and professionalism.

4I cannot thank them enough for their contribution.
