First Annual Research Training Workshop of the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health

The COEMH’s first annual, Research Training Workshop was held in San Diego on 13-14 May 2010 and served as a showcase for recently completed and ongoing fieldwork-based research being undertaken by young scholars in the interdisciplinary field of migration and health. UC faculty members served as discussants, providing expert feedback on the students’ work and commenting on its relevance to their own research. Additional mentoring was provided through one-on-one meetings between participating students and faculty members.

The Workshop Organizing Committee was comprised of Wayne Cornelius (UC San Diego), Coordinator; Frank Bean (UC Irvine); Claire Brindis (UC San Francisco); and Robin DeLugan (UC Merced).

A selection of papers presented at the workshop were edited for publication as a special issue in FACTS Reports, entitled “Migration and Health”.

The Center of Expertise on Migration and Health

Migration is a global phenomenon involving hundreds of millions of people, with major social and economic impacts on both countries of origin and destinations. In the United States, California is by far the most affected by these population movements. The new Center of Expertise on Migration and Health (COEMH) at the University of California (UC), San Diego, is the first multidisciplinary, university-based program in the world devoted to systematically studying the health consequences of international population movements and developing more effective strategies to address them.

The research agenda at the COEMH focuses on four key areas: behavioral and socio-economic determinants of health, health outcomes in migrants’ communities of origin and destination, child health, and health care delivery and policy. Forty scholars at ten UC campuses have agreed to serve as the Center’s initial core faculty.
