Second Annual Research Training Workshop of the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health
Outline
Top of pageThe Center of Expertise on Migration and Health
Migration is a global phenomenon involving hundreds of millions of people, with major social and economic impacts on both countries of origin and destinations. In the United States, California is by far the most affected by these population movements. The Center of Expertise on Migration and Health (COEMH) at the University of California (UC) is the first multidisciplinary, university-based program in the world devoted to systematically studying the health consequences of international population movements and developing more effective strategies to address them.
The research agenda at the COEMH focuses on four key areas: behavioral and socio-economic determinants of health, health outcomes in migrants’ communities of origin and destination, child health, and health care delivery and policy. Scholars from the ten UC campuses have agreed to serve as the Center’s initial core faculty.
Sixth Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health
The COEMH’s Second Annual Research Training Workshop will be held as part of the Sixth Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health, in Berkeley and Oakland, California, on 20-24 June 2011. The Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health is a five-day course taught by highly recognized international experts that offers a combination of lectures, workshops, and field trips, in various topics related to migration and health. Participants will be able to learn about the relationship between migration and global health from different medical, sociological and political perspectives, as well as learn specific tools that facilitate research and health promotion among migrant populations. Each annual Summer Institute showcases new research and topics, and participants can look forward to dynamic and engaging presenters and an agenda packed with the most relevant and pregressive topics.
A selection of papers presented at the workshop will be edited for publication as a special issue in FACTS Reports, entitled “Migration and Global Health”.
